Ghost File: Ashes To Ashes....Not Necessarily
The Story of a New Hampshire Haunted House
What would you do if you found the ashes of the former owner of a house you just purchased in the closet? Or what if your young daughter came up to you and said, "tell that man to get out of my bed"? These aren't hypothetical questions, It really happened to The Carr Family in New Hampshire.
They just purchased their house when things began to happen. Every morning about 4:30 Andrea (the wife) was awaken by sounds in the basement: doors closing, boxes and a chair and other things moving around while no one was down there. The little girl developed an imaginary friend (or was she)....and then there was the pictures. Andrea sold collectibles on an online auction site. When she took photos with her digital camera, she would sometimes get more than she bargained for. A strange mist or ghostly figure would sometimes appear in them. The noises began to get louder and her husband began to think she was paranoid, so they decided on a course of action.

This was one of the Ghostly Images caught by Andrea's camera
They contacted the niece of the former owner to find out more about the house. They soon found out that "George" the former owner want his ashes buried by a tree that he had planted, a tree that the new owners had cut down! To try to difuse the situation, they scattered George's ashes on the property in a simple ceremony. Things became quiet. The little girl's "friend" went away and the noises ceased. It looked as though the ceremony had worked, or so they thought. Andrea began to hear the noises again, but was afraid to tell anyone. The daughter began to hear what sounded like evil laughter in the woods each night. What was going on? Both Andrea and her husband began to hear voices. "I hate you." "Leave this place." "It's not safe here". These were some of the things they heard. Not knowing what to do, they emailed us.
After reading her email, I telephoned her and set up a time to do a preliminary investigation. She was hoping for us to get some evidience to prove she wasn't going insane. Somehow I knew that this was the real deal. We arrived at her house late one Saturday night to conduct our investigation. We introduced ourselves and they reiterated what was going on with her house and grounds. Maureen told me that she could feel a presence there, but I was drawn outside. We gathered up our equipment and headed outdoors.
We visited the site where they had spread the ashes and took some readings and pictures. Instead of going inside we decided to go around to the front of the house. As we walked around the corner of the house my EMF meter went off. Maureen felt a presence there. We were just outside of the master bedroom. We took some more pictures and headed inside. While we were in the basement Maureen made contact. Using her pendulum, we asked the "spirit" questions while Karen used her recorders. It seems that "George" was still hanging around and he wasn't a happy camper. He felt that this was his house and wanted the new owners out. I told him to "chill" and "get over it", but this only angered him more. Then out of the blue, George was replaced by something else (even more nastier than him). Maureen had had enough and broke contact, or at least she tried. She quickly went outside, but whatever it was followed her. In the front driveway my meter was going off the scale and Maureen's pendulum fell apart.
We used every trick we knew to shake this thing. Whatever it was, we felt that it was very old and very bad. Finally it let go. We went back inside. Andrea asked if we could get rid of it. I said I would see what I could do and blessed the house. We said our goodbyes and left. I never saw Maureen so happy to leave a place. The next day Karen got into a serious accident and the day after that Leo went in the hospital for emergency gall bladder surgery. Coincidence? I hope so, but sometimes I just don't know.
